This course meets Area IV requirements for the A,A,/A.S. general education requirements. The course is an introduction to the academic study of the Hebrew bible/Old Testament. Each of the three major western religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) traces its origin and development back to this fundamental document of western civilization. The course examines the religious life and thought of ancient Israel within the context of its historical, political, social, economic, and cultural setting. A wide range of methodologies will be used that come under the category of historical and literary criticism, enabling students to understand and analyze the meaning of the Old Testament in its original context as well as in the contemporary one.
